Fugly Bakes

Stuck at work? She'll come to you.

This is the pre-order she is already running through Instagram DMs as of this week, just with the admin taken out. The postcode gate, the 10am cut-off and the cap on Friday drops are all hers, this just enforces them so she isn't saying no to people by hand. The shed itself stays first come first served further down the page.

Where are you working?

Yarm postcodes only for now. If you're just outside, tell her anyway, she keeps a list.

What are you having?

Whatever's on this weekend's menu. The specials go first.

This Friday

She does a set number of drops in her lunch hour and then it closes.

Where to leave it

So she's not wandering round an office asking for you.

The cap is the number she can physically deliver between 12 and 2 without the shed suffering. She sets it, the site counts it down, and once it's full the page says so instead of her having to. Same idea as the postal Tuesdays, just measured in drops rather than boxes.

Brownies through your letterbox

Not in Yarm? Pick your box, pick your flavours, pick a posting day. Baked fresh the day before it's sent, wrapped, sealed and gone tracked. The box is built to fit a standard letterbox, so nobody has to be in.

Which Tuesday?

Each posting day takes a set number of boxes and then closes. That number is whatever she can actually wrap in a morning.

3

Once a Tuesday is full it sells the next one instead. She is never committed to posting more boxes than she can get to the post office, no matter how well a post does on Instagram.

Sent tracked

Royal Mail Tracked 24, £4.50, or free when you spend over £30. Tracking number by email on the Tuesday.

Good for a week

Best within five days of arriving. They freeze brilliantly if you're pacing yourself, which you won't be.

Arrived squashed?

Send a photo within 48 hours and she'll sort it. It doesn't happen often but it happens.

Friday to Sunday

What's in the shed this weekend

No ordering, no reserving, no faff. Whatever's on the shelf is what's going, and when it's gone it's gone. This is just so you know what's worth getting up for.

The shed is first come, first served on purpose

Reserving would take the fun out of it. Get there early, bring a bag, pay by card or in the tin. Can't get there on Friday? That's what the workplace delivery is for.

4

Still deliberately nothing to click here. Her point stands: reserving from the shed defeats the object. The two pre-order channels above both exist so people who can't get to the shed can still buy, not so people can skip the queue. That distinction is worth saying out loud on Wednesday.

Menu for Fri 4, Sat 5 & Sun 6 September

Open 10am till sold out
Menu changes every week and goes up here on a Wednesday, same time as it lands on Instagram. Stuck at work Friday?
5

One weekly list feeds this board, the Friday delivery menu, the countdowns and, if you want it, a printable poster in her brand. She fills it in once instead of rebuilding the graphic every Wednesday night.

Made to order

Celebration cakes

Disco balls, dinosaurs, five year olds with strong opinions. Tell her what the party is and she'll come back with a price. These aren't sold through the shop because no two are the same.

Dinosaur drip
Disco number cake
Old school sponge
Sprinkle birthday

Cakes don't go through the basket. They are an enquiry, she quotes, she takes a deposit. Trying to price them online is how you end up baking a four tier cake for thirty quid.

Tell her about the cake

She usually replies within a day. Two weeks' notice minimum, more for the big ones.

Prototype: this form doesn't send anywhere yet.

The serious bit

Allergens and ingredients

Every single thing that leaves the shed carries a label with the full ingredient list, allergens in bold, and a best before date. Here's the short version.

What's always in the kitchen

Everything is baked in one small kitchen that handles:

  • Wheat and gluten
  • Milk and eggs
  • Soya
  • Nuts and peanuts

Which means nothing here can be called free from, even the gluten free brownie. That one is made with gluten free flour, not in a gluten free kitchen.

Before you order

Full ingredients for every bake are listed on its own page, and again on the label in the box or bag. If you're ordering for someone with an allergy, message first and she'll tell you straight whether it's safe.

Registered with the local council. Food hygiene rating displayed at the shed and here once we've got the certificate.

7

Both pre-order channels are distance selling, so allergen information has to be available before they buy and on the label. Worth asking whether she is already printing labels, because if not that is a small extra job you can quote for and it removes a real risk for her.
